Joseph
Thomas Morman died at home peacefully in the presence of loved ones and
caregivers on Sunday, April 3, 2022, concluding a long and blessed life
focused on serving others.
Joe was born on September 22, 1929 in Miller City, OH. He was the
youngest of 11 children born to Joseph Anthony and Gertrude (Schmenk)
Morman. He was preceded in death by all his siblings: Fr. Edmund, Adolf,
Mildred (Sr. Damien), Ruth (Sr. Anita), Fr. Richard, Fr. Wilbert, Mary,
Rita (Sr. Gertrude), Theresa (Sr. Jovita), and Vincent.
Before
completing his studies to become a missionary priest, Joe reconsidered his
vocation and chose to be open to married life. This also opened him to an
invitation to join the US Army where he was stationed in Hawaii to "guard
the pineapples from friendly forces.” It was during this time that Joe met
the love of his life, Rosemary (Ellerbrock), to whom he was married for
50 years. They soon settled in Marion for the rest of their lives.
Joe’s
life can be summed up by the words of service and love for God and man. He was
a teacher at heart and influenced the lives of numerous young adults. He taught
math at Pleasant High School and was the work/study coordinator at the high
schools of Crawford County. Joe also taught and influenced the
rehabilitation of inmates for decades at Marion Correctional Institution until
he was “let out for good behavior.” Joe also felt called to work with
those with developmental disabilities and was instrumental in the establishment
of MARCA industries.
Joe was also a faithful servant in the practice of his Catholic faith. As a
longtime member of St Mary Parish, he was a Eucharistic Minister, sang in
the choir, and a member of the 4th degree of the Knights of
Columbus. His retirement was filled with numerous other church
activities, visits to nursing homes, and volunteering for Hospice, St Vincent
de Paul, and the Marion Council on Aging. In his precious free time, Joe
loved playing cards with several card clubs, fishing, and gardening. With a
positive attitude to the end, Joe wished to brighten everyone’s day and was
always ready to give and receive jokes.
Joe’s
examples of love and service will never be forgotten by his family. He is
survived by 7 children: James Morman (Jeri), John Morman (Susan), Richard
Morman (Suzanne), Joseph Morman (Michelle), Sherri Schlitt (Dan), Steven Morman
(Lisa), and Mark Morman (Theresa) as well as 24 grandchildren:
