John D. Hurn

MARIETTA, GA: Former Marion resident Dr. John D. Hurn died on July 2, 2011, in Marietta, Georgia. He was born on August 6, 1926, in Oakpark, Illinois, to Anna and Harold Hurn and preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Hal Hurn, who was a psychiatrist.

He enlisted in the Navy after turning 18 in 1944 and served on a destroyer in the Pacific theater in World War II. Following the war, he earned degrees at the University of Illinois and Roosevelt University before receiving his doctorate in Music Education from The Ohio State University. He taught music education both on the main campus in Columbus and at OSU - Marion. Dr. Hurn and his family lived on Uhler Avenue from 1968 through 1991, and his wife of 26 years, Doris P. Hurn, preceded him in death in 1990.

He is survived by his daughter, Janet E. Hurn and her partner Tina Gregory of Monroe, Ohio; and his son, Brian D. Hurn; his daughter-in-law, Katie Hurn; and his two grandchildren, Gavin and Lily, of Marietta, Georgia.

Dr. Hurn was a talented musician who entertained many with his piano playing up until his death. He was fond of travel, genealogy, and the arts, and he participated in the Marion Madrigal Singers and Marion Community Theater.

A brief graveside service will take place in Shelby, Michigan, in August on what would have been his 85th birthday.
