Sandra Lee “Sandy” Apthorp

Sandra Lee “Sandy” Apthorp, 79 years young, passed away on November 14, 2019. She was born in Marion, Ohio to the late Floyd “Tater” and Mary Katherine “Kitty Mom” Apthorp on November 16, 1939. She spent many years of her life as a Marion resident where she was employed by Anthony’s Laundry, West Lawn Party Store, to name a few, and finally retiring in 1999 from the Marion Correctional Institute as a corrections officer.

She spent around 30 years playing left field and pitcher on various softball teams, most known for Malo’s, M&M’s, and K&S All Stars. An avid bowler, she spent many a Friday night at the Plaza Bowling Lanes where her high score was a 298. A kid at heart, she played Super Mario, Nintendo, and Donkey Kong many hours in front of a TV.

You could say she loved Elvis, his music, and she fit into the era in which she was born. Her collection of unique T-shirts, tennis shoes of every color, and matching sunglasses kept her stylish and young. She was a kind-hearted woman who loved her family and friends. This also gave her a love for her cats and she enjoyed spoiling the unloved ones and giving them a paradise to live in.

She is survived by her younger sister; Diana “Doodle” Schroeder of Marion, OH., a foster sister; Loretta “Boots” & Gary Mason and their children; Samantha & John of Cardington, OH. She had a special love for Doodle who she helped raise. A special bond; memories of younger years of horseback riding, dreaming of starting a band, bowling, and playing softball thru the years. Miles sometimes separated them but always daily phone calls at 7:00 PM, Sandy made sure to tell her she loved her. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, sister; Kathie (Ray Jr.) Apthorp, and her best friend: Sylvia Byers.

Sandy’s life partner; Vickie Roeder survives in Deltona, FL. where she and Vickie had lived since their retirement. They were enjoying life as it was meant to be!  Red Lobster, Mexican, and Vickie’s cooking was always on the menu. Casino boat gambling, sitting by the pool with kitty cats, and listening to oldies in the Chrysler 300 were a few of Sandy’s favorite past times along with watching Sunday football, crime shows with her many dogs thru out life and don’t forget popcorn, Pepsi, and an occasional NA beer. Sandy will be deeply missed by her family and friends from Marion, OH. & Deltona, FL.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020, at 10:00 AM in the Marion Cemetery.
